how a free cat cost me $500

I think it's safe to say, I have always had a cat if not more in my life. We were always adopting cats, getting kittens from the new batch at Grandma's farm, or start out fostering a few and end in adopting those ones too. Right now, I'm in a house with four, 2 kittens and 2 grumpy old cats.

It started with getting my kitten Sylus for Christmas. A girl from work surprised me with him and of course it was love at first sight. As it is most of the time when you see a 3 month old kitten in front of you. About a month later we adopted Pan from the Humane Society and we were back up to a total of 4 felines in the house.

What I do want to talk about today is how cute little FREE Sylus ended up costing me $500. Some people may not realize just how expensive it can be to have pets, especially when you start out with a kitten. When I got Sylus, he came straight from the farm and he never had anything done with him. No vaccines, no surgeries, no nothin'. So we were starting from scratch.

Sylus' first bill came from Petco, where I had all his vaccines done with the walk in vet clinic. I decided to do Petco because it was cheaper then going to the actual vet clinic and paying for office visits every time I walked in. The vaccine shots were also cheaper going through Petco. The vets that were there were also extremely nice and always happy to see Sylus. So Sylus got his first 8 week kitten package that included his first set of distempers and his dewormer. This came to a total of $41.

A few weeks down the road I made an appointment at our local vet clinic for his pre-surgery examination. This was mandatory at our clinic for new kittens who have never been there before. Personally I thought it was a bunch of b.s. because it took the doc 2 minutes to check Sylus' butt and heart rate to make sure he was healthy. I could've told him that. This visit was another $40.

Yet another few weeks later, Sylus had his next appointment at Petco. This time he got another set of distempers and dewormers and also the Feline Leukemia test and vaccine. The feline leukemia vaccine isn't mandatory, I chose to get it for him because our last couple of cats died from it. I figured it was the safest bet. This visit cost $98.

Now the time came for Sylus to finally lose his manhood. This was going to be his first overnight stay and he did wonderful. The vets had him out in the office in the morning when I picked him up and he was running around playing with the other cats. During this visit, Sylus got neutered and front claws declawed. Some people may be against the declawing, but Sylus will never be an outside cat so he doesn't need them for protection. Also I was starting to look like a suicide watch victim with all the cuts on my wrists. This visit cost the most at $170.

Sylus' last appointment was to Petco for his last round of shots. Here he got another the last dose of the distempers, dewormers, Feline Leukemia, and also the rabies vaccine which was also another optional one. This visit cost $63.

We were finally done and little Sylus was 100% healthy.

After all these visits his grand total was $412.

Now, this was just the cost for his vet visits. I said (in the title) that he costs $500, that's because you have to include the cost for food, litter, and toys (because every pet needs toys). I also still live with my mother who buys the food and litter. We fee 4 cats who go through a 20lb bag @ $25 in a few months. If I get the kitties toys, it's usually the 99 cent one that are super shiny and crinkle, because those are their favorites. But really, cat's will play with anything, you don't need to buy fancy toys for them.

I love all my cats and I will probably always have a cat in my life. I'm so thankful to have Sylus, even though he's an asshole sometimes. And that $412 I spent to make sure he was healthy was the best $412 I ever spent.

If your thinking of getting a cat or even a puppy, make sure your ready to hand over a hefty sum of cash. Adopting will also be cheaper. We got Pan for about $200 adopting from the Humane Society and that included everything Sylus had done through the vet and Petco.

I hope this was helpful to those new pet owners and people thinking about getting new pets. Good luck and remember to love your little guy or gal with everything you got!

The Blogmopolitan Quiz

I woke up and found Erin's version of this and sat in bed for a good 30 minutes reading everyone who linked up. Of course I had to tag along and do one. The quiz they do in Cosmo is one of my favorite parts to read in the mag and it was so fun to fill out my own.

I also wanted to state how crappy I have been at blogging lately. Forgive me people, being a college student sucks and it wipes my brain free of any original ideas. So I can't promise anything until summer starts up, which needs to soon because this -30 degree crap Wisconsin is throwing at us is getting old. You hear me Wisconsin!? Cut this shit out.

However, I've had all week off because of my job hates me, so I've had some time to put together some semi-cool posts. You can look forward to seeing a couple healthy muffins recipes that I am so excited to share because they turned out delicious! Also there is a wonderful giveaway coming your way so keep a look out for that.

Talk soon!

my addiction.....to sugar

Guys, we have a problem. I'm addicted to sugar. Like I crave that wonderful sweet nectar of the gods almost everyday. I constantly want candy after every meal, when I'm bored, when I'm watching a movie, when I'm not watching a movie, even when I think about whether I want to watch or not. It's terrible!! And it's gotten worse! I blame my addiction on growing up and always having a dessert after your meal. That's how it always was. You ate your lunch, you got a cookie. You ate your whole dinner and you got a piece of cake. It's been carved into my brain that I must have something sweet to finish off whatever the hell I just ate.

I went to the dentist the other day for my 6 month cleaning and I had 3 cavities! That's 3 little sugar demons I have renting out my teeth and not paying rent. I haven't had 3 cavities since I was 3, probably, I don't really know, but it's been a long time. I was so angry with myself, because I brush my teeth twice a day and rinse with mouthwash! The only lie I ever tell them is that I floss everyday when in reality it's only after I eat popcorn. Now I have to get 3 fillings, all because I couldn't control myself with the damn candy bags.

This needs to stop. I haven't eaten any extra sugar for 4 days now and I feel like I'm going cold turkey off heroin, if I knew what that felt like. I went out and bought several packs of that Extra Dessert gum and it's been helping a little. I try to eat one every time I have a craving, so really a pack doesn't last that long. I'm trying to train my brain that it doesn't needs sweets after every meal. I read part of an article that says it takes at least 2 weeks for you to stop craving something. That's 2 weeks of dread for me. That's 2 weeks of looking like a caveman searching for food after every time I eat lunch! But I'm sticking to it. I will not let this addiction define me. My name is Kelly and I am recovering from a sugar addiction.

I wanted to share a few dessert recipes I've come across that have no refined sugar in them. I've been trying to switch to desserts that have less or no sugar in them and these next few recipes are to die for! So if your battling a sweet tooth like me, check these out.

My mom has been making banana bread for us since we were little. I love when the house fills up with the aroma and baking banana bread. I've made the recipe several times myself before so I know how much sugar goes 1 batch. I've cut out some sugar in the past to see if it would make a difference and I didn't taste any changes, so why not cut it out completely and throw blueberry in it?

I haven't tried these yet, but I'm dying to. They look so fudgy and gooey and they have avocado in them, so you won't feel guilty after eating more than 1.

These babies are not only sugar free, they are butter free and flour free. How the heck are these things made then you ask? With only 5 ingredients you would think these cookies are nasty and flavorless, but trust me, they are so good and so easy to make! Being a cookie girl like me, this is a nice alternative to the other cookies that my mother like to make with a few cups of sugar.

Sylus: a Christmas surprise

If you already follow me on Instagram then you will have already seen this special gift of mine. If you don't, you should, because I link it ever so nicely for you right there. But for Christmas this year, I got quite a surprise when I came into work one day. It was Kid's Workshop at Home Depot so I was busy stopping children from eating paint or smashing their finger with a hammer. While my coworker and I were cleaning up, my supervisor called me over and said she had something for me.

Being someone who loves getting things, I ran right over with a smile on my face. She pulled out a big ol' box wrapped to the nines in wrapping paper. I was so shocked at first, thinking how nice and thoughtful she was for getting me a Christmas present. She handed me the box and in 2 seconds my face went from having a huge smile to my heart almost beating out of my chest. The box meowed and I started crying.

After that moment, I realized just how nuts I am about cats. Who cries when given a cat? I pulled the little guy out of his box and he snuggled right into my arms. I could feel his heart beat beating just as fast as mine. I was given a kitten for Christmas, one of the most surprising gifts I have ever been given. The other being a ham from the Christmas before. No one has ever gifted me a ham before.

So everyone, meet Sylus. He's a maniac, but he covers it up nicely with his sweet little face.

winter scenes on the farm

After stuffing my face with turkey and mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving, I snuck outside to snap some pictures. It was a beautiful snowy afternoon and my Grandmas has an even more beautiful backyard, that happens to be a several acres large. The horses were up close to the barn and the second I started snapping away at them, they became very intrigued and got closer. I love getting close ups of horses, their eyes are so darn gorgeous. After a while my hands became numb, but I continued to grab some close ups of things around the farm. Then I went back inside and ate more pie.

today is a celebration

Happy 24th birthday to this handsome devil.
Love you

My First Photo Shoot // Kevin and Bria

and a blooper for the road...

I had the pleasure of capturing these two on camera a few weekends back and I loved every moment of it. Some of you may know the name Bria here on the blog and that's because I mention her every now and then. She happens to be my beautiful best friend and that handsome fella there is her man. I should mention that they've been together since we were awkward and smelly teenagers. That love you see in these pictures cannot be faked.

This also was my first "photo shoot" and I really hope it's not my last. I had so much fun behind the camera, snapping pictures left and right. Truthfully I had no idea what I was doing and I'm glad Kevin and Bria didn't mind me fumbling with my camera every now then or bossing them around to get the shot I pictured in my head. I can't wait for the next opportunity to capture so much love on camera.

What do you guys think of the pictures!? Let me know your thoughts and any tips you may for me in the comments below!

yes, this is another post about cats...

Isn't she a beauty? Snickers has been by my side ever since Patches left. I swear her personality gets bigger and bigger with every death of a feline in this house. I also am convinced that she took apart of Patches' soul, because some of the things she does now is freakishly similar to the things Patches did. For example, the drooling, the following me around everywhere I go, the meeting me outside the bathroom door every morning, or my favorite...non stop meowing. Like, where did this cat come from. A couple years ago it was lucky if we saw her twice a week.

I'm not against it though. Just look at that face.

play a little tune

This weekend I had Saturday off so Friday night after work I took a quick trip to visit Chris. It was a wonderful last minute decision, because I have been craving some much needed boyfriend time with him. We ate lunchables, watched zombie movies, and I listened to him play his ukulele. We also watched The Bling Ring with my big girl crush, Emma Watson. The movie made me wonder if it really is that easy to break into Paris Hilton's house, because if it is, I might just have to try. That is if I ever make it to California.

As always, I hated saying goodbye to that handsome face and taking my hour and half drive back home. Now it's back to the books and back to sitting in classrooms. Until next time.

favorite little places online

I have so many favorite online shops that I could spend hours scrolling through pages of stuff to buy. Today I narrowed it down and kept it strictly to my favorite Etsy shops. Etsy just fascinates me with the endless amount of goodies they have. I love finding new shops and seeing the different types of jewelry or clothing items people create.

These are my favorite...

Leftover Studio // I bought my camera bag from this shop (the first bag) and it could not have been a better purchase. They make some of the best quality bags I ever seen and I know my bag will be lasting me more then several years.

Laura Laurent Salon // This gal makes the cutest art pieces that one day will be hanging in my bathroom.

OceanTime // I recently got my belly button pierced and I've been obsessed with stalking this site for new rings when I'm able to change it out. That Harry Potter one? Need it!

Abra Kadabra // We all know I'm a cat lover and this adorable little jewelry shop has these cat pendant necklaces that I just adore. I mean, come on.

first day of senior year

x
Yesterday marked the start of my senior year of college and probably not my last year. I started out at a new school, which was both nerve racking and exciting. Being on a new campus was a thrill for me, however getting lost in a building with a million classrooms is like trying to find the exit to a maze that doesn't have one.

I had a few breaks in between my classes yesterday so I popped a squat in a nice shaded area with a picnic table and did some people watching while eating my lunch. After about an hour of this, I realized that the school I now go to has a very interesting bunch of people.

Here are the thought that ran through my head during this time...

"That crop top is a little to cropped and probably not the shirt to be wearing to school."

"That's a lot of dread locks for one couple."

"That's a very interesting weave you have there."

"It is way to early in the morning to be wearing a skirt that short."

"I don't understand why you're on a bike if you're peddling as fast as I'm walking."

"My class is at 3...(2 minutes later) wait when does my class start?"

"So tell me again why it was a good idea to wear a mini skirt and ride your bike to class?"

"I guess I'm going to need to get a penny board if I want to fit in here."

It was an interesting first day.

Happy Labor Day and some random ramblings

x
Happy Labor Day everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic long weekend full of cook outs and sunny weather. I did absolutely nothing this weekend other then enjoy my last few days of summer. School starts bright and early tomorrow morning. I am actually quite excited, which that feeling will probably change within a week of classes. I am transferring to a new college this year that involves a 45 minute commute. But hopefully it doesn't end up being to bad. I am really excited for the new campus and the new school year. I've been shopping like crazy this summer for new clothes, so my wardrobe is stocked full of new shirts ready to be worn!

So last night I was craving a big bucket of popcorn, like most nights, and my best friend wanted to go see a movie (what a perfect pair we are). So we headed out to catch the 7:00 show for Mortal Instruments. I really enjoyed the movie but it had so many awkward moments in it that probably could have just been left out. If I had read the books, it probably would have all made sense, but I was lost quite a lot during the show. I may just have to grab the books and start reading so that my brain can understand what the hell I just watched.

I also have been on a health kick these past few weeks. I've been exercising and eating up the farmer's market almost every week for some good vegetables. I think one week I went through 3 large zucchinis from all the zucchini pizzas and baked fries I was eating. I also just bought the Jawbone Up wristband to keep myself motivated and on track. I might do a review on it, because it's an awesome piece of fashionable technology. It tracks all your steps, intake and outtake of calories, your sleep cycle (my favorite part), and it even vibrates when you've been inactive for too long. I've never been on to track all stuff before or even care about how many calories I'm consuming in a day, I just recently thought it would be really neat to actually see what I'm doing.

That's all I got for you folks today. Talk to you soon!

My First Time

You may have clicked on this post thinking I was about to spill the deets about a certain sweaty and awkward experience of mine. However, for your own good that won't be happening today or really ever. Instead, I'm going to talk about some of my first times today. I'm a youtube junkie and there's been a tag going around called "My First Time." I liked some of the questions and thought it would be fun to reminisce is the good ol' days.

My first word?
I have no idea. I asked my mom and she doesn't even remember, so I'm going to say it was "cat." That definitely sounds right.

friends who have rabbits together, stay together.
My first best friend?
Her name is Nikki and we still happen to be best friends. We met sometime in elementary school and through all the happiness and sadness, we stuck together. She may be a million miles away right now on a gorgeous island while I'm stuck in Wisconsin, but that's okay, because I know in 50 years she'll be sitting on my porch laughing at stupid looking people with me.

My first pet?
My first pet was of course a cat. My mom let my brother and I take home two cats that my Aunt had at her pet shelter and I named the fella Twix. Twix had a very short life, he developed a kidney disease that was going to be end up costing a lot of money, that my mom didn't have at the time, to fix so we had to say goodbye. Then along came Patches and we all know about that handsome guy.

My first grade teacher?
I think it's weird that almost everyone will remember their first grade teacher. Why is that? Mine was Mrs. Hanns and she was a short little woman and all I can remember of her is that she was pregnant...

The first person who texted you today?
It was Chris of course, really the only person who ever texts me. He texted me "you da best."

My first car?
My first car was a hand-me-down P.O.S. from my brother, that I quickly fell in love with. It was a sad day when the brakes suddenly went out on me while driving and couldn't ever be fixed. It was an even sadder day when my father bought me an old grandma mobile. Yeah, I know, I'm a drama queen sometimes. But years have past and me and that grandma mobile have fallen for each other, blue velvet interior and everything.

this was the only picture I had left...
My first Boyfriend? First kiss?
My first boyfriend was a guy named Collin who I stole from my best friend of the time, back in 7th grade. I was a hooligan I tell ya. It took us a good 3-4 months before we even kissed each other. Just remembering the awkwardness gives me the chills. However, my first kiss was with my brother's friend while I was in 6th grade. That kiss was even more awkward. Having your brother and your best friend standing right next to you while this boy is waiting for you to kiss him? Yeah, it's weird. It was the quickest and shortest peck on the lips I've ever had. And now that guy is a pot head with a bald spot. Dodge a bullet there!

Canon T3i with lens 50mm f 1.8
First big purchase?
It was probably my laptop that I bough for college, but I'm also considering my Canon that I bought earlier in the year. That baby was a pretty hefty investment. However I do not regret a single penny.

First Job?
My first job was the summer leading up to my sophomore year of high school.  I moved in with my dad for the summer and worked at a quaint little sub and ice cream shop called The Chocolate Factory. The shop was located right across from the beach, which I never complained about. It was a good first job, but after my several jobs in food service, I will never go back to it. No matter how broke I am.

Dead Woman's Pass- the highest point on the Inca Trail (about 15,000 ft)
First time out of country?
The first time I left the good ol' US of A was when I graduated high school and for my graduation/birthday present, my step mother brought me to the wonderful country of Peru. We spent two weeks in Peru, one week in the capital and the last week in Cusco where we backpacked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It was a gorgeous trip and one I will always remember. I will also remember being the only white, blonde woman within a 50 mile radius of Cusco. Let me tell ya, it was like I was Kim K for a day.

I tag all of you to share your first time! But keep it to these questions, I think I speak for everyone when I say we don't want to know about your actual first time.

over the hill and through the woods.

Yesterday I decided to walk through one of our state parks because I had nothing to do. I brought my camera along to snap some pictures and wanted to show you guys. It also ended up being a mini workout because this park is at the top of a hill that pretty much inclines straight up. My legs definitely felt it afterwards. The view from the top was gorgeous and it was neat to see how small my little city looked from all the way up there.

Have a fabulous Friday everyone!

p.s there's more popsicle recipes coming next week!! Aren't you excited!!??

p.p.s for those photography junkies out there, I was using my 50 mm f 1.8 fixed lens for these photos.

some of that news stuff

1. How sad is this? I'm not a hard core Gleek, but I do watch the show when it hits Netflix and I adore it. To find out that one of the main stars of the show passed away just the other day is so sad. Yesterday I was glued to the celebrity news shows to listen in on what was going on surrounding Cory's death. They kept reading tweets from his fans and tweets sent to Lea and the cast of Glee. I'm telling you, every time they mentioned Lea and how hard this situation must be for her I was like "Oh god, here comes the tears!" Cory's passing is truly so sad and he was such a talented person. He will 100% be missed.

2. Anybody else going nuts about this movie? I'm a sucker for anything that includes Ryan Reynolds and chaotic violence. Cannot wait for this to come out.

3. This heat. It makes a person crazy. I'm thankful I don't live where it's most dreadful, however, Wisconsin is kicking my ass. Yesterday I spent the day in short shorts and a sports bra. My mother doesn't believe in air conditioning, so I'm just going to sit in front of the fan and roast. How are you guys doing during these hot hot times?

4. Instagram. Gotta love it.

5. GFC. The whole thing with Google reader going away for good confused the crap out of me. Everyone was saying how we're not going to be able to see our followers in our sidebars anymore and how we'd have to transfer all of the blogs we follow over to Bloglovin' because we wouldn't be able to read them anymore through blogger. Then the day came and it was still all there. HUH??? I expressed my confusion on twitter and wonderful Callie helped me out. Was I the only one who didn't know Google reader was different from blogger or whatever? Glad we got that straightened out. I don't know why all ya'll were freaking out.
